The Vaishno Devi temple is nestled near Katra in Jammu & Kashmir, attracting over 9 million visitors annually. This site holds immense mythological significance, with roots tracing back thousands of years. However, its prominence as a pilgrimage destination surged only after infrastructural developments in the late 20th century.
According to Hindu mythology, the story centers on Bhairon Nath, a tantric who pursued the goddess Vaishnavi. To protect her sanctity, Vaishnavi assumed her divine form and beheaded Bhairon. The shrine at Bhawan marks the cave where she meditated, while another temple commemorates the spot where Bhairon’s head fell. Devotees believe the Yatra remains incomplete without visiting both shrines.
Our Travel Plan: A Comprehensive Itinerary
We planned a three-and-a-half-day trip that included visits to Patnitop and Vaishno Devi. Here’s how we managed the journey:
- Day 0: Overnight train from Delhi to Udhampur.
- Day 1: Explore Patnitop, including a visit to Sanasar Lake.
- Day 2: Sightsee in Patnitop, travel to Katra, and begin the trek to Vaishno Devi.
- Day 3: Early morning darshan at Vaishno Devi, followed by the return journey to Delhi.
The Vaishno devi Trek: A Journey to Bhawan
The trek to Vaishno Devi shrine begins at Banganga in Katra. Here’s a breakdown of the routes and experiences:
Route Options
- Banganga to Adhkuwari
- Old Route: 5.5 km via Charan Paduka, offering pony, porter, and palanquin services.
- New Route: 7 km via Tarakote, cleaner and more scenic but without pony services.
- Adhkuwari to Bhawan
- Old Route: 6 km via Sanjichhat.
- New Route: 5 km via Himkoti, less steep and more suitable for hiking.
Our Trek Experience
We started our trek at 11 PM, opting for the old route unknowingly. Despite the crowds and the occasional unpleasantness from pony waste, the trek offered stunning night views of Katra illuminated below. Adhkuwari, the midway point, was bustling with thousands of devotees. After a brief rest and a stop at a McDonald’s outlet (a delightful surprise for our youngest traveler), we resumed our journey, reaching Bhawan by 5:00 AM.

Upon reaching Bhawan, we encountered massive crowds, with lines stretching over a kilometer. While waiting for darshan, we faced challenges like finding locker space for our belongings. Though I couldn’t enter due to time constraints, witnessing the spiritual fervor of the devotees was an unforgettable experience.
Returning from the Yatra
While descending, exhaustion from the sleepless night made the return trek arduous. We skipped visiting Bhairon Nath temple due to fatigue. The return journey took around three and a half hours, and we reached Katra by mid-morning.
